Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived into a musical family, 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is a cousin and daughter to the singing sensation Dionne. The singer began her singing career in the choir at the church she attended The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark as a young child and by the age of fifteen, she was singing back vocals professionally along with her mother on Chaka Khan's 1978 smash Im Every Woman. In the following years, she was a backing vocals to Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls and even her mother. Beginning in 1981, she started working as a singer with the New York-based funk group Material. The band's high-quality vocal performance with this group that caught the attention of record companies such as Arista. Whitney Houston, her debut album that debuted in 1985 was the top-selling album of a debut singer. A number of hit singles, such as The Greatest Love of All, Saving My Love For You How Will I Know You Give Good Love as well as The Greatest Love of All were released from the album setting the stage for her to beat the Beatles with seven consecutive US number ones. Album was sold out in US 3,000,000 copies and then increased to 25 million worldwide. It gave her the first of her six Grammy Awards. The Whitney follow-up in 1987 with the singles How Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to further build upon the success of her debut album. But it was it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard that solidified her status as one the world's most loved artist. The movie and her role as a character was not well received, but the soundtrack as well as her version to Dolly's I Will Always Love You charted for several months at the top of the charts. In all, she sold over 44 million albums and singles all over the world. That same year she married ex-New Edition singer Bobby Brown with whom she has a single daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown.
